Restoring the historic Stibnite mining district through renewed mining efforts seems closer than ever before. We are excited to share our progress with you in our 2015 Sustainability Report. This report is part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and keeping the community informed about our work at Stibnite.
In 2015, we formed new partnerships that allowed us to advance our understanding of the site and our work in the community. In particular, we worked with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on a study of the environment near the Stibnite Mining District. In order to design a mining project that restores the environment, we must gather as much information as possible about the conditions that exist at the site today.
Our partnership with the USGS allowed us to conduct an in-depth, multi-year study of the site. As a result, we have more information on the mineral and sediment levels in the waterways. The USGS sampling confirmed that the levels of mercury and arsenic near the site are elevated. This information indicates a need to restore the site as soon as possible so these sources of metals can be removed and contained. We know we have the right team in place to do the work that is necessary to take care of the environment.
