2014 Winter Carnivore Survey

Wildlife Ecologist Graham Neale, of Garcia and Associates (GANDA), and Midas Gold recently completed field work on a second winter carnivore survey for wolverine, lynx and fisher. Midas Gold is studying more than 500-square miles of potential habitat areas for these mammals in and around the Stibnite-Yellow Pine Mining District using numerous observation stations that include bait, wildlife cameras, and fisher cubbys.

Lynx and fisher were not identified last year, however, DNA analysis of hair samples revealed one male and one female wolverine. Wolverine cover large distances and this couple was photographed over a broad range of the study area. Through the study in 2013, we also found numerous red fox and pine martin.

We expect similar results this year, which will be incorporated into our terrestrial wildlife baseline study. You can see some of the photos from the wildlife cameras below.
